I paint with acrylic paint on canvas or water based paint on paper. On some canvases I apply a variety of materials, including, torn paper, sand, paper bags, and tissue paper to create a texture. Defining shallow, middle, and deep space is a challenge I approach with each painting. I am fascinated with the interplay of color on color and the intensity of color built up in layers. Through the application of many thin layers of paint, an image begins to emerge.
I look to my collection of photographs and other visuals as resource material for inspiration. I allow my subconscious to dictate the subject matter, using images I am most attracted to. I am drawn to images that connect me to the natural and animal world. Toys have also influenced me to explore metaphoric meanings.
Rather than paint with the intention of making a statement, I allow the paintings inform me of their meaning.
